Wave & Aqua – Cost Optimisation

An overview of the cost optimisation features available in Wave and Aqua.

Written by Alphaus Support Team

Overview

Aqua is accessible from the left menu in Wave. It provides a suite of features to help optimise your cloud costs, including monitoring and managing Reserved Instances (RI) and Savings Plans (SP).

Dashboard

The Wave & Aqua dashboard allows you to build a personalised view by pinning the metrics you want to monitor. Widgets can be saved and rearranged to suit your workflow.

Available widgets include:

  • RI and SP purchase recommendations

  • Utilisation rate per account

Instance Usage

The Instance Usage section visualises on-demand usage, RI, and SP coverage rates per account. You can use this data to evaluate RI and SP purchases and monitor whether you are meeting your target coverage rate on a daily basis.

The lower section breaks down on-demand usage by service, helping you identify which RI or SP purchases would have the greatest cost reduction impact:

  • On-demand costs per instance family

  • On-demand usage hours per instance family

  • On-demand usage hours per instance type

Instance Reservation Management

This section allows you to manage your purchased RIs and SPs in a consolidated list across multiple accounts, reducing management overhead. You can also visualise the utilisation rate of purchased RIs to measure their effectiveness.

An alert feature is available to notify you before an RI or SP is about to expire, so renewals are never missed.

Recommendations

The Recommendations section provides three types of recommendations:

  • RI / SP Purchase Recommendations — Suggests optimal RI and SP purchases based on your usage

  • Instance Size Optimisation — Recommends instance downsizing opportunities

  • Scheduling — Recommends usage schedules based on instance activity by day and time
