Overview
The Instance Usage feature gives you a consolidated view of Reserved Instance (RI) and Savings Plan (SP) coverage across multiple accounts. You can use filters by account and service to analyse coverage and inform RI and SP purchase decisions.
By monitoring your on-demand usage, RI, and SP coverage rates, you can evaluate whether you are meeting your target coverage rate and measure the effectiveness of your cost optimisation efforts.
Unlike native cloud vendor tools, Aqua allows you to manage multiple accounts in one place and visualise on-demand usage rates and breakdowns in a single screen.
Coverage Scope
Select the level of granularity to display coverage for:
Payer account — Displays coverage at the payer account level
Billing group — Displays coverage across all accounts within the selected billing group
Account group — Displays coverage for a custom grouping of accounts, at a different granularity from billing groups
Account groups are useful when your cost optimisation unit differs from your billing unit. For example, if billing is managed by department (billing groups) but RI and SP purchases are made at the Organisation Unit (OU) level, account groups let you analyse coverage accordingly.
Account groups are created by Alphaus on request. Please contact us when you need one set up.
How to Use
① Coverage rate graph (upper)
The upper graph displays the coverage rate for on-demand, RI, and SP respectively. You can see at a glance whether you are meeting your target coverage rate.
② On-demand breakdown (lower)
The lower section breaks down the on-demand usage shown in ① by service. This helps you identify which instance families or product types have the highest on-demand costs, and which RI or SP purchases would have the greatest cost reduction impact.
You can also use filters to narrow the analysis to a specific AWS account or service.
Notes
Account groups are created in coordination with Alphaus. Please reach out to us when you need one set up. UI-based group creation is planned for a future update.
