Aqua – Enabling CloudWatch Access for Instance Resizing Recommendation

How to grant Alphaus access to AWS CloudWatch for instance size optimisation recommendations.

Written by Hajime Hirose

Overview

To enable instance resizing recommendations in Aqua, you need to grant Alphaus access to your AWS CloudWatch logs. This is done by deploying a CloudFormation stack in your AWS account.

Setup

  1. Log in to the AWS Management Console

  2. Navigate to CloudFormation → click Create Stack (top right) → With New Resources (Standard)

  3. On the Create Stack page, enter the following URL in the Amazon S3 URL field and leave all other settings as default:

  4. On the Specify stack details page, enter a stack name and click Next. You can use any name — alphaus-rightsizings-access is recommended for easy identification.

  5. On the Configure stack options page, leave all settings as default and click Next

  6. On the Review page, check the box next to I acknowledge that AWS... and click Create Stack

Stack creation takes a few minutes to complete.

Verifying CloudWatch Access

To confirm which AWS accounts have access to your CloudWatch logs:

  1. Open the alphaus-rightsizings-access stack and click the Resources tab

  2. Click the role link — a new window will open showing the Summary for that role

  3. Click the Trust relationships tab to see the list of AWS accounts with access

These AWS accounts belong to Alphaus Cloud and are used for QA, Dev, Preview, and Production environments.
